Outlook Nickname File and Directory Server Upgrade
Microsoft Outlook creates a nickname file as you send email messages. After the upgrade of the Cal Poly Directory server (ldap.calpoly.edu) scheduled on April 6, 2006, an addressing error may occur when using Microsoft Outlook. The directory server is used for email address validation. After the upgrade the problem occurs because there is a conflict between the structure of the data in the Outlook nickname file and the data from the new directory server.
This is the error message you may see:

Fixing this problem will require the deletion of your Outlook nickname file. After deletion, the nickname file will be recreated and grow as you begin sending email again.
The nickname file can be found on your computer at
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\User.nk2 where User is the profile name used by Outlook.
The nickname file should not be confused with the LDAP or Global Address Book lookups.
Two options are available to fix the problem.
Option 1: Download and run a script that will automatically fix the problem.
-
Make sure all Outlook windows are closed. (The script will not work if Outlook is running.)
-
Click the Download Script link. (Firefox users: right-click the link and choose "Save Link As..." to save the script.)
-
When prompted, click the Save button and save the file to your Desktop.
-
Double-click on the rename_nk2.cmd file to run the script.
-
After the script is runs you can delete the rename_nk2.cmd file.
Option 2: Follow the directions on the Microsoft Web site to manually delete the file.
