Remote and Home Access

The Oracle Calendar can be accessed in your office, on your home computer and on a laptop even when you’re on-the-road and not connected to the Cal Poly computers.

When you’re at home or on-the-road, you can also use the Calendar by connecting to the Internet and running the Calendar Software

When you’re away from your office and home computers and you’re using a laptop on-the-road you can run the Calendar in a disconnected state, WITHOUT connecting to the Internet. To run the Calendar disconnected, or off-line, you must prepare to do so by downloading calendar entries to your local hard disk BEFORE running the software disconnected.

With Oracle Calender, there are no distinctions in the software whether you’re at a workstation at Cal Poly or a remote location. However, the Calendar allows you to work connected to the server (on-line) or not connected to the server (off-line). When you’re working off-line, you cannot view other users’ agendas unless you’ve previously downloaded them to your hard disk while you were connected to the server. Before you can use your agenda off-line, you must setup your off-line agenda while connected to the server.

Below is a list of features when using Oracle Calendar off-line.

Accessing Oracle Calendar Using Oracle Calendar Off-line
(not connected to the server)
- overview Once your on-line agenda has been downloaded to your off-line agenda, calendar entries can be created, modified and deleted without a connection to the Cal Poly network or the Calendar server. However, the off-line agenda must be uploaded to your on-line agenda for the entries to be in effect.
- modem speed The modem speed will only be a factor in downloading and uploading your agenda.

If you need to download/upload several agendas, this process takes a long time.

- phone charges Since you have the ability to work with your agenda while not connected to the Calendar server, phone charges will be reduced.
Software Features
- viewing other agendas To views the agendas of other users/resources, the agendas must be downloaded in order to be available to you while working off-line.

If you intend to schedule meetings off-line, the agendas of all the attendees and any resources need to be downloaded.

To designate which agendas you would like downloaded, the People/Resources tab in the Off-line Preferences (Options, Off-line...) dialog box should be specified.

- agenda reconciliation Reconciliation is the process of synchronizing your off-line agenda with your on-line agenda. Reconciliation occurs when you’ve been working off-line and then choose to work on-line.

You will need to configure your preferred reconciliation settings in the Reconciliation tab of Off-line Preferences (Options -> Off-line...).

- off-line and on-line agenda modifications to the same entry During the reconciliation process, you can choose whether to display the Host Reconciliation dialog box when:

1. An off-line entry is deleted but the host entry is unmodified, or

2. An off-line entry is modified and the host entry is modified.

- agenda conflicts during reconciliation If you have chosen to check for conflicts on upload, the Conflicts Detected dialog box will appear each time the two agendas do not correspond concerning an entry. Information will be displayed about the conflict and let you decide what should be done about it.

If you have chosen to ignore conflicts on upload — the Agenda will not prompt you about any such conflicts.

- designate function The designate function can be used but the owner’s agenda must be downloaded to work off-line.

To designate which agendas you would like downloaded, the People/Resources tab in the Off-line Preferences (Options -> Off-line...) dialog box should be specified.

- working off-line To work off-line, you will need to configure your off-line settings using Options -> Off-line... from the main menu. To designate your download preferences, see the Download tab in the Off-line Preferences dialog box. Modifications to your off-line options needs to be done when you’re on-line.

To work off-line, you will need to:

1. Download to local file... (File menu)

2. Work Off-line... (File menu)

- working on-line To work on-line after working off-line, you’ll need to choose

1. Work On-line... (File menu)

Oracle Calendar will upload your calendar dependent on the settings you have specified in the Options, Off-line... configuration.
